Reich's Chancellery Plate and Wall Tile # 879
I have seen a couple of these plates over the years but never one in
hand, that is until now. Bought back from Germany by a ranking member of
the U.S armed forces the plate is very high quality Bavarian porcelain
and bears the simple " Kanzlei des Fuhrers" motto (Office of the
Fuhrer).
Accompanying the plate is another piece that is
interesting and while I have seen trinkets that were reportedly made
from the marble around Hitler's fireplace, this is a block of Reich's
Chancellery tile. Also bought home by a G.I it is the first piece I have
seen in raw form.
In the closing days of the war the
Chancellery was bombarded by Russian artillery and for the most part
destroyed, many pieces were taken by the Russians and the Americans
after the war. It is reported and debated that a Russian monument was
manufactured of the remains of the tile from the Reich's Chancellery,
and there was surely a lot of it. I just never see it.
