Massive Period Reichadler- Lauchhammer Catalog Piece (RARE) # 2075
Lauchhammer was responsible for some of the nicest pieces manufactured
during the 3rd Reich and the quality of the casts is just top notch.
This was a catalog piece and the base at the time was an option. I have
been looking at the photos and trying to figure out how to go about
writing this piece up properly and the problem is that its not going to
politically correct and I could run right off the rails with it as it
really is a powerful piece. The sheer size alone is 23 inches long and
19 1/2 high.... That is massive!!. But the bird if made smaller would
not really project the power if it were. And I think that is what I am
looking at here... the power of aesthetic and the application of scale
to the subject piece, it just has to be big.
There is no greater example in modern history of the use of aesthetics to project power than that of the 3rd Reich, it was a masterful endeavor. I often wonder what it would be like to walk about pre-war Germany and take in the sites. The buildings and monuments, the banners and statues, the uniforms and the sense that Germany was in full control of its future on both a financial and cultural level. The power of aesthetic is the projection of power itself onto opposing culture and a representation of the societies historical roots upon its citizenry, it is essentially what makes a culture great and it manifests itself throughout the centuries in exactly that manner. This bird is both a political tool and a cultural reminder, its massive size is not for no reason and it is a power piece and very rare.
These are numbered casts with this one being 7 and there are probably less than 10 made for the period, It is a massive and rare Reichadler from the firm of Lauchhammer with its original optional base. The piece measures 23 inches in length and 19 1/2 inches high which is probably the largest bird I have seen in bronze ever.
I must say the one really nice part about a piece like this is that a collector can put it anywhere and no one would ever know what it was unless you told them and you can enjoy it in plain site.
