Presentation 1/10 Felderrnhalle Mahnmal Statue in Bronze (Paul Ludwig Troost- Kurt Schmid Ehmen) # 3479
They say history takes 100 years to right itself and the 3rd Reich depending where you start is about 98 years old if I use the Putsch as a date for start. Prior to that there is Coburg and WWI and many small groups and associations of all shapes and sizes, mostly political and some mystical. Today you have the rise of a new museum in Munich, and about 10 years ago a display of National Socialist history as the people of Germany take interest in their history and the state has become more accepting of it for historical purposes, with their narrative of course. The recent demand for artifacts of original memorabilia and rare pieces with provenance has performed quite well at auction and this has not gone unnoticed and is aided by the demand of historical institutions now looking to fill their cases using contributions and funding from various sources as well as speculators who buy both their passion and taste and hope that the 100 year rule will help them make a profit in the future as the material becomes more mainstream, and as it pertains to the arts.
The key thing to remember is that the history is of a political party and not to become distracted from that fact that it is nothing less than a political movement. It is born out of the interim period of WWI and WWII and allowed for Hitler to rise to power, but to establish not only that political movement but when aided by men like Himmler and others a paramilitary force who's goal it was to reinvigorate lost generations of the past going well past centuries of various cultures and without limit to any borders.
In short Germany is representative of mid-evil Europe and the Goths with a culture that predates the U.S by a couple thousand years. It is their history that crosses paths with the Roman Empire, Emperor Constantine, and pre-Christian ritual, not ours. These elements represent the interim period of WWI and WWII in daily life politically and and in the dark shadows of the SS.
The interim period between wars is a history in itself and as much as I used to like to write these description I have found over the years that the history is much more complicated than what is presented on the Hitler channel or what is known by most. It is well passed comprehensive and while I am still enthusiastic about collecting, I cannot always translate the importance of a piece or why. In this case its a little easier because the piece go's directly to the heart of the Nazi party, it is one of a kind, it is dedicated, and it is real. It should not be here and represents the struggle of the party and its members to the point of martyrdom and history and mysticism. It stands taller than any eagle, any medal, any trinket with a swastika. It was designed by two of the most prominent persons in the Reich, Paul Ludwig Troost and Kurt Schmid Ehmen.
While the interim period gave birth to numerous parties and clubs with political goals and members the one of note here to start is the Thule Society, a mystical group with beliefs in anti semitism and racial theory which essentially ends in 1920 at the behest of the D.A.P. The D.A.P being the predecessor of the N.S.D.A.P. The Thule society had a membership inclusive of Rosenberg, Hess, Eckhart, Frank, Goering, Himmler, etc. Combined with the D.A.P you add Adolf Hitler and the transition to the N.S.D.A.P and then you have the Nazi party two years prior to the battle of Coburg and three years from the infamous Beer Hall Putsch.
The Putsch takes place on 9.11.23... When it was over 16 party members were left dead along with and four policeman. Adolf Hitler landed himself in Landsberg and upon his release in 1924 and set about taking the reins of the party to legitimate elections and finds himself Reichskanzler. On 9.11.33 two Ehrentempel designed by Troost had been completed, each bearing eight caskets of the fallen and martyrs of the struggle taken to get where they were. A plaque of dedication was attached to the front of the Felderrnhalle to the four policemen and above that was the Mahnmel.
Mahnmel is the monument of the fallen and bears the names of the 16 members of the Nazi party who gave their lives in November 1923. The designs for the temples and the statue were laid upon Troost and the sculptor was the famed Kurt Schmid-Ehmen who was known for his large Nuremberg Eagles among other great works. It was presented on November 9, 1933 and a program was printed and is shown in the photos. Martyrs during the Reich are not limited and there are many, a book of martyrs was published as well and includes the 16 from the Putsch. There have been a few who have confused this piece with the smaller variant of about 6 inches that was made of pot metal and highly collectible. It is not the same. This piece is manufactured in bronze and is just under a foot tall and just under a foot wide. The piece was manufactured by Jeweler Biwus & Burkhard of Augsburg, a high end jeweler on par with Tiffany and bears their mark and the mark of Augsburg.
If I use Troost's original sketches this is about 1/10 scale and likely a commissioned piece and a one of a kind, there are no others to be found in existence. It is a dedication which has caused some issue with covid and the archives but I believe I have tracked the family who still has roots in Germany and Brazil. Reference to the recipient is scant until I went for the family. But there is one clue and I think it is the guy as the name is not popular. It is Ludwig Schroff. The Schroff family from Augsburg were printers I believe and while they are out of business Schroff Druck was an Augsburg printer who was famous for the Nur Hitler election Poster dating from 1932. I am placing the poster in question in photo spot #7 for reference. I have also added links for background for the framework I have laid out below.
