Der Fuhrer Bust from Braun Haus! (Lothar Dietz (1896-1976) # 2101
Note: Documentation
*A letter dating from 1982 from Franz Heichlinger head of the foundry who cast this bust states that the bronze was cast in 1934-35 putting the piece right where it should be in the pre-war mid 30's. He go's on to state that the bust was placed in the Braun Haus and that only one casting was made. There is a file that accompanies this bust and the owners correspondence.
The letter dated Nov. 14 1982 is posted with the translation in English in the photo section. In this letter the head of the foundry states on company letterhead that he knew Herr Dietz personally and only did one casting for him of the Fuhrer and that unfortunately it had gone to the Braun Haus.
** So he apologetically reveals that the one bust that he did pour for Herr Dietz went to the Braun Haus...
This is going to be the largest Adolf Hitler bust that I have offered and its stands at 18 inches high without the base and the base is 7x7x4 so your overall height is 22 inches. In terms of scale this is going to put him at over 2 times life, which is pretty big but short of obnoxious. It is also a direct veteran acquisition and is untouched other than having to replace the base with what is a proper variegated green marble platform which always makes bronze look sexy and proper. ** So he apologetically reveals that the one bust that he did pour for Herr Dietz went to the Braun Haus
It is also the first time I have had my hands on a piece by this artist Lothar Dietz. I do have information forth coming on him and waiting for that but will try and cover what I can as of now. This has been sitting in the families home and the veteran at some point did some research and made contact with the artist himself and there is correspondence and paperwork that is going to go along with this. It is not too often that I get that type of material with a Hitler bust and I should have that information up by the weekend. Since it is a new artist when any transaction is done on this piece it will be moved to my gallery for show and saved for informational purposes.
In general, when these pieces come in they are often not without minor flaws which is fine for these and this one is a beauty and other than a little wax as not been dicked around with. It has the nice dark chocolate patina that I personally like especially with the green bases as they just pop when joined together.
The bust itself is in very fine condition showing some verdigris in the eyes and to a couple of spots on the back which is essentially character, there are some paint spatters and minor nicks to the bronze, but no damage and very typical and really what you want. The bust is crisply signed in the bronze Lo. Dietz. Flange stamped "Guss Franz Heichlinger Muenchen 19. Most likely a privately commissioned work, possibly unique and I have never seen this model before.
