Blue Max Presentation Adler-Ritter von Schleich # 2000
This is a 1937 presentation bronze eagle on two-tiered variegated green marble base. 16 5/8" wingspan, 12 3/4" overall height. The bronze is foundry marked Bildgiesserei Kraas Berlin S.42, and monogram signed AB, (Anton Buschelberger, who sculpted many models for the Kraas foundry.)
Silvered dedication plaque translates to: "To comrade Eduard Ritter von Schleich on the 20th Anniversary of the presentation of the Pour le Merite Heartfelt Best Wishes The Old Eagles". Neatly attached to the plaque is a double sided, silver, 1930's jeweler copy of the "Blue Max". (Pour le Merite) The cross is nicely detailed with no enamel damage. There is no indication that it ever had a suspension ring attached so was likely made specifically for this purpose. It has a silver content mark 900 stamped into the edge of the upper arm of the cross.
Eduard Ritter von Schleich, nicknamed the "Black Knight" was credited with 35 victories, making him one of the top 20 German aces of WWI. Von Schleich was awarded his Blue Max on 2 December 1917. Following the war, von Schleich was involved in the Red Revolution in Munich, escaping murder by the communists due to a timely warning from an ex-Jagdgruppe.4 member. Later, like many other ex-officers he found his way to Hitler. He was one of the earliest members of the Nazi party and even a member of the SS, but remained a true soldier. Like millions of other Germans, he believed in the truth of Hitler's words. As a Hitler Youth leader, he organized flying for the youth movements, and with the formation of the Luftwaffe, he naturally re-entered flying service. On December 11, 1938, he became the first commander of the newly formed Jagdgeschwader 132 "Schlageter", to which, it may be remembered, came Adolf Galland, one of the leading aces of WWII. A new generation was rising and Eduard Ritter von Schleich retired, a Major-General in the Luftwaffe.
This eagle trophy was presented by Die Alten Adler, a fraternal veteran WWI pilots organization, of which von Schleich and Hermann Goering were members.
The condition of the piece is excellent. Some darkening and discoloration to the presentation plaque, but this just from age and exposure.
Included with this bronze is a scarce, autographed and inscribed real photo postcard of von Schleich in his Hitler Youth leader's uniform, Blue Max at his neck. The back is hand-inscribed and signed on the back in black ink: "Fliegen heisst Siegen uber Zeiten und Weiten" (Flight means victory over time and space) The condition of the postcard is excellent, and the signature is clear and dark.
A very rare lot.
