Hohenzollern Veterans Standard # 1145
Being first and foremost a Reich collector I try and avoid deviating
off my core interests but the history will sometimes allow for
justification when the right piece presents itself and I just had to
have this piece as not only is it a jaw dropper, but carries more than
its share of history. Justification is after all not that difficult.
Measuring 43x43 the banner represents the State of Hohenzollern and a ruling dynasty that reaches back into the 1600's and ruled Prussia for centuries and would include the likes of Frederick the Great and Kaiser Wilhelm.
Black and white the colors of Hohenzollern make up the base and front and center is the Hohenzollern Adler with the typical Latin motto "Pro Gloria et Patria" or "For God and Country" and the opposite corners bearing the Order of the House of Hohenzollern in gold, a high award that would automatically be included upon the awarding of the Pour le Merite. The opposing corners carry the intertwined initials "WR" for Wilhem Rex or Wilhelm the King/ Kaiser.
The reverse is the unit information as follows:
"Comrades League of the Former Regiment Prince Karl Anton v(on) Hohenzollern." Then, reiterating that this is a "Hohenzollern" unit "40th Rgt." and then "Wiesbaden - Biebrich," the location of this particular outfit. With the little notched shield at the upper left is the official Coat of Arms of the State of Hohenzollern. While Hohenzollern contributed to Germany's ruling family, they contributed very few troops during World War I due to its small size, making this piece not so common and its condition is really quite minty for a piece of its age. The thick gold bullion accents and stitch are at such a high level that the pictures actually short change the piece and will try and add some photos as time allows.
