Arno Breker- Party # 791
In the end of 1937 or early 1938 Breker
received the commission for two monumental figures to be placed in the
forecourt of the "Neue Reichskanzlei". First they were titled "The
Torch Bearer" and "The Sword Bearer". At the official opening of the
"Neue Reichskanzlei" in January 1939, however, Hitler renamed them
"Party" and "Wehrmacht".
Arno Breker, born on July 19th, 1900 in Elberfeld, studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Hubert Netzer between 1920 and 1925, worked in Paris between 1927 and 1933, and moved to Berlin in 1933. In 1935 he received his first public commissions and soon made a career for himself, his name almost becoming a synonym for Third Reich art. No other artist in the Third Reich had such an important politico-cultural position or received so many prestigious commissions. Breker received all the funds for realizing his ideas, his revenue was astronomically high. The sculptures "Party" and "Wehrmacht" are probably Breker's best known works created during the Third Reich period.
