SS Presentation Felderrnhalle Statue- Mahnmal- (Jürgen Stroop) # 1838
This was a Max show grab this year and as usual I grab these things
quickly as they are not encountered often and they are considered to be
rare. While it was an obvious dedication piece and SS, the date did not
click in my head as anything special but it did not coincide with the
monument itself or its history at face value when I bought it, in short
nothing happens on this date in German history of any real note.
What I love about dedication pieces is that they give me the opportunity to slam my head against my desk for hours on end in frustration with endless web searches, dead ends, and books tossed about, its really fun and I hate it so much that its hard to relay my disdain for it here at the moment. However, sometimes it pays off and in the worse case you generally learn something new.
I took the time to run the SS lists and the profiles of over 800 SS officers and only 3 others share this birthday and based on the dedication format, I am certain that is what it is. The four officers are Georg Martin SS # 87,679- Oskar Dirlewanger SS # 357,267- Helmet Kunz SS # 284,787 and Jurgen Stroop SS # 44,611. The only one that has anything to do with Sturmbann I/28 is Stroop who was head of the Standarte at the time of the dedication making the dedication most fitting as being from the leader corps to the head of the Standarte on what would be his 41st Birthday in 1936.
I have a 550 page file on its way in and have authorized a search of his records on the off chance there is some form of document referencing the piece although it would seem to be enough for me to conclude that this would be the recipient. Stroop was such a radical N.S and S.S idealogue that the political piece makes sense when examining his profile. A decorated WWI vet he rose through the ranks of the SS after joining in 1932. He received his Ehrenring in August of 36 and also received the Honor Degen amongst other awards.
Stroop who was most famous for being the man responsible for putting down the Warsaw uprising in 1943 under the direct orders of Heinrich Himmler and his reports known as the Stroop Report were forwarded back to Germany where he updated as he went the details of putting down the uprising. These reports were utilized by the military prosecutors at the Nuremberg trials to prosecute him for war crimes. He was executed in Poland in 1952 for crimes against humanity and the liquidation of the Warsaw ghetto amongst other charges.
