Diskuswerferin- Philipp Becker (1893-1964) # 3115
This is an original cast zinc sculpture of a female discus thrower by Frankfurt sculptor Philipp Becker (1893-1964) Becker exhibited at the annual art salons in the Haus der Deutschen Kunst in Munich. He exhibited an eagle and a bust of Hitler in 1939, and, in 1943, a nude female figure (not dissimilar to the one offered here) titled "Diana of Our Time". This sculpture measures 27" tall and is mounted on its original marble base. It has an applied bronze color patina which shows some wear, but the metal itself is in excellent, undamaged condition. Signed and dated in the metal. This sculpture was created and cast 1942. Bronze casting was forbidden in Germany after 1939, since all copper was needed for war purposes. This is undoubtedly a rare model, and may in fact, be unique. Another cast has never come up for sale before. (weight is 20 lbs.)
