Chess Set # 607
I must have seen several chess pieces offered before the first set hit market several years ago.
These do not appear in the production lists for 1938 or 1939, and no mention of them for prior years. So?, that would leave sometime post 1939. However these exhibit gold leaf accents on both sets, which was prohibited at the onset of war.
The first set had provenance and had come out of Germany in a diplomatic pouch if I remember correctly, the 2nd set showed up on Ebay and is the one pictured here. I do not know who these were for, or if they were made for someone special. But I think commercial sale is out as an option. If anyone has any information on these I would be happy to hear about it. As they must have been for someone.
